The majestic Montgo, at 735 metres at its peak, is one of the most recognizable landmarks of Javea. El Montgo is a lone mountain that rises up off the Mediterranean shores of Las Rotas beach in Denia and lying in between there and our home town of Javea. It is long and from the Javea side it’s almost like it is an elephant, which is why it is also referred to as the elephant mountain amongst locals.
El Montgo is impressive, to say the least, and being right alongside Javea, it watches over the charming, Spanish town we call home. From practically anywhere in Javea, you can look up and catch a glimpse of the giant elephant looking down on you in the town. Not only is it beautiful to look at, it is also very popular amongst hikers, walkers and cyclists. The views from the top are incredible, and on a clear day, you can look as far as the Balearic island of Ibiza.
It is most definitely one of our favorite hikes in the area and one of the preferred ways to spend an active weekend afternoon in Spain. There are various paths to take to explore the Montgo mountain. From Javea port which is the longest walk is a 16km route to the top of the Montgo. A challenging walk for those not scared of heights is to the 'eye of Montgo' involving a steep climb but rewarded with stunning views over the valley and Mediterranean coastline and then explore the cave system within the eye.
There are two trails we know from the Denia side of the Montgo, the one that we usually take is the most direct to the summit, on the sea-end of the mountain. Another favourite walk starts alongside the beautiful beaches of Las Rotas in Denia over to Javea Port.
Not only is the Montgo good for hiking, it is also known as one of the most beautiful residential areas on the South side of the mountain in Javea. The entire base of the mountain is a very sought-after location for Javea property buyers. As a property owner there you can enjoy complete peace and tranquility while being at a close distance to Javea and the sea and having beautiful views and easy access to the AP-7 motorway.
